ENGLISH STUDIES – PRIMARY1

Introduction

English Studies is an important subject in Primary 1. It helps pupils develop basic skills in listening, speaking, reading, writing, grammar, vocabulary, and correct pronunciation. Through simple words, sentences, stories, songs, and conversations, pupils learn how to communicate effectively and understand what they read and hear.

General Objectives

By the end of Primary 1, pupils should be able to:

  1. Listen attentively and respond appropriately to simple instructions.
  2. Speak simple English words and sentences correctly.
  3. Recognise and pronounce letters of the English alphabet.
  4. Identify and read simple words.
  5. Write the letters of the alphabet correctly.
  6. Form and write simple words and sentences.
  7. Understand and use common vocabulary in everyday situations.
  8. Identify basic parts of speech such as nouns, verbs, and adjectives.
  9. Read and understand short, simple passages.
  10. Develop interest and confidence in using the English language.
