SUBJECT INTRODUCTION: CULTURAL AND CREATIVE ARTS

Cultural and Creative Arts (CCA) is an important subject taught to Primary 1 pupils to help them understand, appreciate, and express themselves through creative activities. The subject introduces young learners to simple forms of drawing, colouring, painting, music, drama, dancing, crafts, and other activities that are part of their culture and everyday life.

At the Primary 1 level, Cultural and Creative Arts encourages pupils to develop their imagination, creativity, confidence, observation skills, and ability to work with others. Through practical activities, pupils learn how to use simple materials and express their ideas in meaningful and enjoyable ways.

The subject also helps pupils appreciate Nigerian culture, traditions, songs, dances, dressing, festivals, crafts, and other forms of cultural expression. It promotes respect for their own culture as well as appreciation of the cultures of other people.

General Objectives

By the end of Primary 1, pupils should be able to:

  1. Identify and appreciate simple forms of art and cultural activities.
  2. Draw, colour, paint, cut, paste, and make simple creative objects.
  3. Identify and sing simple Nigerian songs and rhymes.
  4. Participate in simple dances, drama, and role-play activities.
  5. Recognise and appreciate aspects of their local culture.
  6. Develop creativity, imagination, confidence, and self-expression.
  7. Use locally available materials for simple creative activities.
  8. Work cooperatively with other pupils during creative activities.

CCA should therefore be taught mainly through practical, participatory, and activity-based methods, allowing pupils to learn by seeing, doing, singing, drawing, making, and performing.
