SUBJECT INTRODUCTION: BASIC SCIENCE

Basic Science is an important subject that introduces Primary 1 pupils to the world around them. It helps pupils develop curiosity and understand simple things about themselves, other living things, materials, weather, the environment, and everyday objects. Through simple observations and practical activities, pupils begin to discover how things work and why some things happen.

At the Primary 1 level, Basic Science is taught using simple examples from the pupils’ homes, schools, communities, and natural environment. Pupils are encouraged to observe, ask questions, identify objects, describe what they see, and participate in simple experiments and activities.

General Objectives

By the end of Primary 1, pupils should be able to:

  1. Identify parts of the human body and explain their simple functions.
  2. Identify common living and non-living things in their environment.
  3. Recognise common plants and animals.
  4. Identify common materials and describe their simple properties.
  5. Understand simple ideas about water, air, light, sound, and weather.
  6. Demonstrate simple personal hygiene and safety practices.
  7. Appreciate the importance of keeping their environment clean.
  8. Develop curiosity, observation, questioning, and problem-solving skills.
  9. Participate actively in simple science-related activities.
  10. Apply simple scientific knowledge to everyday situations.

Basic Science should therefore be taught through observation, discussion, demonstration, practical activities, questioning, and play-based learning, so that pupils can relate scientific ideas to their everyday experiences.
