Nigerian History for Primary 6 helps pupils understand important events, people, communities, cultures and developments that have shaped Nigeria. The subject develops pupils’ knowledge of Nigeria’s past, promotes national unity and encourages respect for the country’s cultural heritage.
General Objectives
By the end of Primary 6, pupils should be able to:
- Explain important events in the history of Nigeria.
- Identify major Nigerian historical personalities and their contributions.
- Describe the development of Nigerian communities and societies.
- Explain the coming of Europeans and colonial rule in Nigeria.
- Describe Nigeria’s struggle for independence.
- Identify important events after Nigeria gained independence.
- Explain the importance of national symbols and institutions.
- Appreciate Nigeria’s diverse cultures and traditions.
- Develop a sense of patriotism and national identity.
